My weekend in Lincoln.

My sister has been saying for years that I should go and stay with her in Lincoln and finally, this weekend I got round to it. Talk about procrastination.
Unfortunately, that weekend I wasn’t very well, which was bloody annoying as I’d been looking forward it so much, but I went anyway and after a reasonably easy train ride to Sheffield, I changed onto another train to get to Lincoln. Man alive... The only way I can think to describe that train journey was hell on earth. It was a tatty old Northern Rail train where the doors literally almost fly open mid-travel. I’m not one of those people who is used to sitting in First Class or anything like that, but I like to have a comfortable, assigned seat without having to kick people out the way to get there first, excluding elderly; they’re fine to take the seats…
When the rickety old thing got further on in the journey, it became more and more empty and I finally had the privilege of having a seat to myself, meaning I was able to get up and leave my bag, (probably not the best idea in all honesty…but oh well), and nip to the loo, which genuinely smelt fresher than the actual train carriage itself.
After what seemed like forever, I knew I had finally reached Lincoln upon seeing the massive cathedral on the even more massive hill. Very Harry Potter-esque!
My sister gave me a number for a taxi company and when I got to the station I called, only to find that they had no free taxis for over an hour, meaning I had to walk up a hill to get to my sister’s flat. Now, when I say a hill… YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!! The street the hill is on is genuinely called ‘Steep Hill’ and boy oh boy does it live quite literally up to its name!
As some guy passed me, dragging a suitcase up it, I suddenly felt grateful that I only had my handbag and a small rucksack. Wondering where I was, as time went on, my sister rang me, giving me a perfect opportunity to stop and take a break. Breathing heavily down the phone like something from a phone call with a BabeStation girl, I told her that I would see her shortly once I found my way there.
Anyway, eventually finding her place thanks to good old Google Maps™ we had a nice relaxing evening watching trashy TV. I was also forced to watch The Lego Movie, which I will admit was actually not as bad as I thought, even though I was left absolutely dumbfounded by the entire experience…
Saturday mainly consisted of my sister running errands round town and me lagging behind feeling more and more ill, which was incredibly frustrating as it was such a lovely day and we could have got into the Castle grounds for free and walked along the walls while topping up our tans. Instead, we got the bus home (I was not walking back up that godforsaken hill again) and by early evening I was actually starting to feel better but we decided to stay in and eat instead of going out and enjoyed a delicious homemade Spaghetti Bolognese courtesy of Claire. Yum!
Another night went by with us watching more TV, only this time a little more sophisticated, Star Trek into darkness (mmmm evil Cumberbatch) and then Green Wing (not so sophisticated…) There was also some dubious Google image searches going on that night but that is probably not best discussed on this blog.. Ahem.
So all in all, despite the fact I was feeling far from my best, I had such a nice, chilled out weekend with my sister and would definitely like to go back sometime when I am feeling better so we can go out and do more stuff. Nevertheless, it was a nice break and something a bit different with different scenery.
If you’ve been thinking about visiting Lincoln, I can highly recommend it, but a warning in advance, make sure you wear comfy and sensible shoes if you are planning to venture up Steep Hill. However literally everyone trekking up the vertical rise does just amble along and appear to show a lot of “interest” in the shops along the way, meaning they can take a break to catch their breath back. Other than that, it’s a beautiful place with lots to offer, so you should definitely check it out for sure!
